I’m working on a number of short films with AFTRS, which is regarded as one of the top 20 film school’s in the world. I am doing hair, plus general and special effect make-up on the films.
First film completed is Easy Death, a hybrid documentary. The film essentially uses elements of an interview, and then a more structured re-enactment. It was an absolute blast to do.
I had to prepare three actors – two male, and one female. I made the two male actors look extremely tired because they hadn’t slept properly in 24 hours, but most challenging, was the female actor who played a dead 73 year old Mother.
When we die, our body starts to decompose straight away, and I had to recreate a body that had been dead for 24 hours. On the Mother, I had to do (almost) full body make-up in a blue/grey tinge, with special focus on the extremities. I also had to age the actor as she is younger than what the Mother was when she died.
Once the embalming scene was shot, I then had to quickly remove all the special effects make-up, and prep the Mother for her “Viewing”. Thus, two different looks for the one actor in a short period of time.
Below are some pictures of the Mother/actor – before and after, plus of the filming.
