Australia’s Last Duel is a beautiful period piece written and directed by Joshua Marks. This short film is a documentary about Sir Thomas Mitchell (surveyor and explorer, who in 1828 became Australia’s Surveyor General) and Stuart Donaldson (the first Premier of NSW) fighting the last Australian duel at Centennial Park in 1851.
It is a re-enactment period piece. I did hair, make-up and special effects on the short film (e.g. I had to age one of the actors slightly as he was a little too young for the role).
We had two beautiful days to shoot the film. The first day was at the same swamp where the last duel took place at Centennial Park. Stunning area, but it was freezing! You don’t realise how much the temperature drops in swamp areas that are heavily covered by trees.
On the second day, we shot at Lindesay House at Darling Point, Sir Thomas Mitchell’s home. The house is wonderfully restored, and it was great to be able to shoot in the same room from which Sir Thomas Mitchell worked.
It was a lot of fun to do. We had a great crew and I’m really looking forward to seeing the end result. Well done to all involved!
