I have a strong focus on colour – I’m a colourist painter.
As a colourist painter, I work chromatically in an alla prima/direct and planar approach. For portraits, I focus on the facial planes and my work is not smooth and blended. My brush strokes are loose and expressive – you can see my brush strokes (I generally work with flat brushes). I paint directly onto a white canvas.
The above is important to note as I encourage students to work chromatically with expressive brushstrokes in my classes. Some students come from a tonalist background training and now want to work chromatically. This can be quite a change and challenge for them, and for some, it can take some time to understand and adjust their painting style.
As a colourist painter and tutor, I fully encourage and support painters to explore colour.
