Naked & Nude Art Prize Exhibition

2nd August 2023 By Veronica Colvin

Thrilled that I’m a finalist in the Naked & Nude Art Prize with my digital oil painting “See Me”!

Congrats to all the finalists and looking forward to seeing the exhibition at the Manning Regional Art Gallery. The exhibition runs from 2 Sept – 15 Oct.

Artist Statement

I created See Me in April this year after a 1.5 year period that was extremely difficult for my family. I had to let my art practice go while I managed the situation.

See Me is finally having the time to refocus on myself and my art practice. I was ready to create and focus on what I love.

It was very important to me that the model have a strong and direct gaze, drawing the viewer in and challenging them to see “her” – directly.

The nakedness of the model represents confidence – but at the same time guardedness. Yes, I want you to See Me, but I will choose who I let “See Me”.

Creating Colour 2 – A Practical Guide for Beginner and Intermediate Painters

2nd August 2023 By Veronica Colvin

The video recording is now available on the Colour Society of Australia YouTube – NSW Division channel, and like all of the webinars from our Creating Colours series, it will remain permanently available to the public.

Jean produced and presented a wonderful presentation discussing how oil pigments work and the challenges we face as oil painters working with them.

We had an amazing response – with registrants from 19 countries. Topics covered outlined below:

  • Deciphering labelling on paint tubes (pigment codes, ‘Permanence’, ‘Opacity’, additives)
  • Colour spaces and basic language  for talking about paints, their colours and handling: Munsell, NCS, hue, value, chroma, saturation; rheology
  • Single paints: (Paint is not the same as Colour!) Mass tone, undertone.
  • Two-paint mixing: “tints”, “shades”, “tones”, combinations of chromatic paints, pitfalls and opportunities when using complementaries to reduce chroma. High and low-chroma mixing curves.
  • Three-paint mixing; how to produce all possible hues. Triples that give “good”/high chroma hue circles. Beginning to think about palettes.
  • Palettes: issues to consider when constructing and evaluating your own palette. (This talk will be “palette agnostic” – no particular palette is being presented as being the best, rather tools are provided for painters to think about the palette that best suits their needs and skills at the time.)
  • Basic colour matching.

28th June 2023 By Veronica Colvin

This webinar is the first of a new series of educational webinars, Creating Colour, intended for ambitious beginner painters through to professional artists who want a better understanding of the technical properties of their media, including both traditional and digital media. This first webinar in the series will provide a general introduction to the pigments and binders used in paint making across many categories of paint, and how the‘ingredients of any given paint affect the properties of that paint and therefore the ways in which artists can use them.

Basil Sellers Art Prize

18th December 2022 By Veronica Colvin

I was a finalist in the Basil Sellers Art Prize with my oil painting of Charmian Frend – “Tough Little Nugget”. The exhibition ran from 8 October to 20 November 2022.

Charmian Frend is an open water and channel swim coach. Charm is also my open water swim coach. I painted her while she was preparing to break the world ice swim record in July 2022, swimming at least 3.75km in water that must stay under 5*C the whole way – and at the same time, she was undertaking a fundraising campaign for pain research. Unfortunately due to Covid and travel limitations, it was not meant to be.

It was exciting to learn that Tough Little Nugget was the first painting to sell on opening night, and thrilled that it has a new home with one of Moruya’s residents, a town located on the far south coast of New South Wales.
